they say it happened because a kid threw a stone—
because he crossed his boundaries,
because he dared to stare down the barrel of a gun
wrap his lips around it
and whisper,
“I’ll swallow you whole.”

on a soil fertilized by blood,
children walk with the spines of men,
fighting for what’s left of their homes.
girls with eyes of flint
and bones of steel
use their small hands to dig inadequate graves—
when they can.
mostly, they gather stones to line their pockets.
mostly, they bend with the weight of loss on their backs.

in the comfort of my bedroom, miles away,
I can hear them:
voices carried on a wind
that smells of gunpowder and acid.
a little boy crying, “my sisters, my sisters,”
a girl asking, “what have you done to my brother?”
a mother pleading, “please, me instead,”
a people demanding, “justice.”
I can hear them,
hear the wails that rip through ribcages,
hear the blasts that rip through lives.

and if you dare to call this war,
I will tear my mouth open and scream.

This is NOT war,
can never be called something so noble—
this is murder, murder murder,
murder,
carnage,
more than a hundred dead,
nearly a thousand wounded.
this is heartbreak.

This is not war.
These are not truths,
but the media telling a story through a kaleidoscope lens,
spewing garbage and lies.
This is not unity,
but division, abandonment, pettiness.
This is not fair.
This is not right.

Palestine, Palestine,
we are with you.
Palestine,
we are standing by you.
we will beat at the walls till our knuckles are bloody,
until our spines fold and our knees buckle
from the force of our stance.
we will yell until they can’t help but listen.
we will push and push and push
til the fall of the barricade,
til justice is served,
til every bit of debris is cleared away.

No, I am not Palestinian—
I’m human, and that’s enough for me to say:
Palestine, I am with you,
I will protest til my voice is raw and horse,
I will protest til it’s over.
